Term limits would have forced Peterson out of office had she not resigned. As arguably the most outspoken critic of anti-abortion efforts in the state house, her absence was noticeable this past session when lawmakers approved making state laws even stricter. Peterson led the state party from 2012 to 2020 and had held a seat in the Louisiana Legislature for 22 years. She acknowledged her gambling addition and claimed at the time that the incident had been leaked to the news media. In 2019, Peterson was issued a misdemeanor summons at a Baton Rouge casino for violating a self-imposed ban there. She acknowledged her struggles with gambling and depression, saying that she had been sober and “off the bet … for a long time.” Peterson added that she continued to take part in a recovery program.
